In graphic and brightly-colored landscapes, artist Paul Calabrese depicts the livelihood of New Yorkers and the up-tempo hustle of the city. Colored pencils and markers contribute to a buoyant, chipper attitude. In a tumble of characters and activity, the viewer may take special care to consider each individual and the unique, occasionally humorous narrative that comes with them. The artist, a native New Yorker, displays a genuine empathy for his characters and an honest sentimentality for his hometown. Paul Calabrese is a true colorist, using a highly varied palette to reflect a diverse, vibrant city. Growing up in Brooklyn, the artist had little money as a child, and began painting seashells at the age of 7 to earn money. Most recently, he has authored and illustrated two children’s books. Calabrese's intention is to create an image that people of myriad cultures and backgrounds can relate to. “I like to bring a smile to their faces,” he says, “While they come up with their own idea of what is going on in the minds of the characters.”
